“Those Turbulent Sons of Freedom”
The Mount Independence Coalition and the Division for Historic Preservation are pleased to be hosting the 12th Annual J. Robert Maguire Lecture on June 8. This year’s speaker is Christopher Wren, author of Those Turbulent Sons of Freedom. He will be discussing the subject of that book, Ethan Allen and the Green Mountain Boys during the American Revolution. He will also address why colonial history still matters.
“Wren fleshes out a lesser-known aspect of the Revolutionary War in this engrossing account of the Green Mountain Boys militia and its complicated role in the struggle for independence. . . . Wren vividly brings to life characters and events.”
—Publishers Weekly
Mr. Wren was a foreign correspondent, reporter, and editor for The New York Times for nearly three decades, heading its news bureaus in Moscow, Cairo, Beijing, Ottawa, and Johannesburg. He is a visiting professor at Dartmouth College in its Master of Arts in Liberal Studies program. He lives in Vermont.
The program will start at 2:00 p.m. at the Mount Independence Visitor Center auditorium. A book signing will follow.
If you’ve read the book, feel free to join the book discussion, sponsored by the Orwell Free Library, in the picnic area (assuming good weather) starting at 12:30 p.m. Bring your lunch. It is Vermont Days that weekend, so admission is free.
