On Sunday, July 5, 2026, learn about “The Birth Certificate of America” at the Mount Independence State Historic Site in Orwell, Vermont. Explore the Declaration of Independence, the founding document of the United States, with site interpreter Stephen Whalen, Ph.D. The talk begins at 2:00 pm and is included in regular site admission.

How well do you know your Declaration of Independence? Whalen examines the historical context of the times 250 years ago. What were the origins and purpose of the Declaration? Why is its structure significant? How has it maintained its legacy through two and one half centuries?

This is one of many programs at Mount Independence this year to honor the 250th anniversary of Mount Independence and the Declaration of Independence, for which it is named. 

Mount Independence is located at 497 Mount Independence Road, Orwell, VT.  It is open daily 10 to 5 through October 28, 2026. It is a National Historic Landmark for its significance in the American Revolution. Site admission is $8.00 for adults, $1.00 for ages 6 to 16, and free for those under 6, Green Mountain Passport holders, and Mount Independence Coalition members. For questions, call 802-948-2000.
