Meg Madden will lead a mushroom walk at the Mount.

On Sunday, August 16, 2026, join mushroom expert Meg Madden for her mushroom exploration walk at the Mount Independence State Historic Site. The program runs from 1:00 to 3:00 pm. Meg will give an orientation first, before leading you out to look for and learn about the wild mushrooms that grow at Mount Independence. Madden is the author of “This is a Book for People Who Love Mushrooms.”

Wear sturdy walking shoes and dress for the weather. Spots are limited, so it is suggested you call the site in advance to reserve your spot. 802-948-2000. The program is sponsored by the Mount Independence Coalition, friends group for the historic site. The event is free, with free admission on August 16th at all the Vermont State Historic Sites in honor of Bennington Battle Day.

The Mount Independence State Historic Site is one of the best-preserved Revolutionary War sites in America, and is also known for its natural resources. It is located nearly the end of Mount Independence Road, six miles west of the intersections of Vermont Routes 22A and 73 near Orwell village; carefully follow the signs. Regular hours are daily, 10 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. daily through October 28 (later than usual in honor of this 250th anniversary year).

The dry weather last year, led to a cancellation of the mushroom program last year. But it has been anything but dry this year, so we expect that Meg will have a lot of specimens to locate during this always fascinating and popular program.
