Mount Independence History Day Long Program – October 21

Come to Mount Independence on Saturday, October 21, 2023, from 10:00 am to 3:30 pm for the “Muster at the Mount: Mount Independence from the Ground Up,” a day of revolutionary discovery.” This total immersion day explores the story of Mount Independence, looking into significant but perhaps less well-known aspects of Mount Independence. Call (802) 948-2000 for details on the schedule and how to pre-register. Lunch is included, the total fee is $25 ($20 for Green Mountain Passport holders and Mount Independence Coalition members). Pre-registration is a must.

The day is a special opportunity and suitable for all levels of interest—from beginners to avid experts. Historians, site interpreters, a geologist, archaeologist, and others will make a variety of presentations in different formats. Topics include geology; the earliest people on the Mount; choosing this location for a Revolutionary War defense; a focus on a special point of time in 1776; looking at some of the soldiers who served here and what they did after leaving; a report on our work on the site’s American Battlefield Protection Program collection stewardship project; and a review of the site’s written history over time and its importance.

The doors will open at 9:30 for check-in and to view the museum before the event begins. The “Muster” is co-sponsored by the Mount Independence Coalition, the friends group for the site.  A previous “Muster” day was held in 2018.

The Mount Independence State Historic Site is one of the best-preserved Revolutionary War sites in America.  It is located near the end of Mount Independence Road, six miles west of the intersections of Vermont Routes 22A and 73 near Orwell village; carefully follow the signs. The site, open daily from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm, closes for the regular 2023 season after Sunday, October 15.
